The new government has made a good start. Home Information Packs (HIPs) are now suspended and are set to be abolished. 

Both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats had stated prior to the election that they would abolish HIPs. The coalition then moved quickly to confirm this in their initial policy statement; a good result for home owners.

Home Information Packs Suspended With Immediate Effect

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and Housing Minister Grant Shapps announced today that the requirement for homeowners to provide a Home Information Pack (HIP) when selling a home has been suspended from Friday, 21 May 2010. Stamp Duty Threshold Raised for First Time Buyers

It was announced at the Pre-Election Budget on Wednesday 24 March that the starting threshold for Stamp Duty Land Tax will increase to £250,000 for sales to first time buyers. The tax relief, for residential property purchases began from 25 March 2010 and will be in place until 25 March 2012.

Interest Rates Slashed to Historic Low Level

In line with predictions, the Bank of England cut interest rates to 1% last week.  This latest cut is the fifth consecutive rate slash and takes rates to an all time low.

Despite the growing calls from the industry to hold rates at 1.5%, this cut to 1% was predicted by trade bodies more than a month ago.

New Legal Requirement for Landlords

From 1 October 2008 it will be a legal requirement for all landlords to have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for their property before it can be let.
